Get paid with Teachable Payments

How payouts work, and when to expect them.

This article covers a feature of Teachable Payments, our new payments experience powered by Stripe. Learn more.

When a student purchases your product, your earnings are deposited directly into your Teachable Payments account — a Stripe Express account connected to your school. From there, funds are paid out directly to your bank account.

There is no reserve held on your earnings. You have full visibility into your balance, what's in transit, and what's been paid out — all from within your Teachable admin.

Note: Only Primary Owners can manage payment gateway and payout settings.

How payouts work

Where your money goes

Every sale made through Teachable Payments follows this flow:

  1. A student completes a purchase through the Stripe-Powered Student Checkout.

  2. The transaction amount — minus Stripe's processing fee and any applicable Teachable fees — is deposited into your Teachable Payments account.

  3. Any collected tax amounts, author earnings, or affiliate earnings set to be handled by Teachable will be reversed from your Teachable Payments account to Teachable's Stripe account.

  4. Funds are paid out directly to your connected bank account.

Payouts are made in your local currency. There is no reserve held on transactions and no delay beyond your chosen payout schedule.

Note: For new Teachable Payments accounts, your initial payouts may take longer than subsequent payouts while your account goes through Stripe's verification process.

Payout schedule

Payouts on Teachable Payments are processed on a daily cadence. A breakdown of this payout cadence is below:

Schedule

When you're paid

Example

Daily

~2 business days after each sale

Sale on Tuesday → payout Thursday. Sale on Friday → payout following Tuesday.

Payouts are processed on business days only. Weekends and bank holidays in your country are not counted as business days.

Your payout currency

Payouts are made in the settlement currency of your Teachable Payments account. This means you always receive funds in your local currency, regardless of what currency your students paid in. Currency conversion, when applicable, is handled automatically via Adaptive Pricing and the cost is passed to the buyer at checkout.

Why your payout may differ from your gross sales

Your payout amount will typically be less than your total gross sales for the period. This is normal. Common reasons include:

  • Processing fees — Stripe's processing fee is deducted from each transaction at the time of sale

  • Teachable fees — any applicable platform or bundle fees are deducted per transaction

  • Refunds — refunds issued during the payout period reduce your available balance

  • Disputes — funds held or reversed due to an active chargeback

  • Tax withholding — where applicable, tax collected on behalf of students is remitted separately and does not form part of your payout

  • Author and affiliate earnings — where applicable, commission earned by your partners is paid out by Teachable, and not included in your payout

Note: Processing fees are standard across all online payment processors — they apply to every transaction on any platform. See Understand your transaction fees and bundles for a full breakdown of what applies to your school.

View your payouts

Payouts dashboard

Your Payouts dashboard is embedded directly in your Teachable admin. To access it, go to Sales > Payouts.

From here you can see:

  • Your available balance (funds ready to be paid out)

  • Balance in transit (funds on their way to your bank account)

  • Payout history

  • Bank account details

  • Payout schedule settings

Payout details in your admin

For a transaction-level breakdown of each payout, select a payout from the table. Each payout entry shows:

  • Date — the expected or actual arrival date at your bank

  • Status — In Transit, Paid, or Failed

  • Amount — the net amount paid out after fees and deductions

  • Applicable Transactions — which transactions were included (can vary based on timezone and processing times)

Tax forms and payout holds

If your school's earnings exceed $500 and required tax forms have not been submitted for all accounts you control, payouts will be placed on hold until the forms are completed. To avoid this, ensure tax forms are submitted promptly from Sales > Payment Settings.

Manage your payout settings

Update your bank account

Bank account details can be managed from your Sales > Payouts page.

  1. Go to Sales > Payouts.

  2. Click See Details.

  3. Update your bank account details directly in the Teachable admin.

Note: Certain account details — such as business type, business name, or EIN — cannot be changed via the Teachable Payments dashboard.

Update other account details

To update personal details such as your name, address, phone number, or email associated with your Teachable Payments account, you can change these via Sales > Payment Settings.

Payout troubleshooting

My payout hasn't arrived

If a payout is overdue, work through the following checks:

1. Check your payout schedule

Confirm whether enough time has passed. Remember that weekends and bank holidays don't count as business days.

2. Check Teachable's status page

Visit Teachable's Status Page to see if there are any active outages or processing delays. During outages, affected transactions are typically rescheduled for the next available payout date.

3. Check your Teachable Payouts dashboard

Go to Sales > Payouts and confirm the payout status. A payout showing as "In Transit" is on its way and may take 1–2 additional business days to appear in your bank account depending on your bank.

4. Check your bank account

Confirm your bank account details on your Teachable Payments account are correct. An incorrect account number or routing number will cause payouts to fail. Also check with your bank that there are no issues receiving incoming transfers.

5. Verify your tax forms are submitted

If required tax forms haven't been submitted and your earnings exceed $500, payouts will be on hold. Go to Sales > Payment Settings to check and complete any outstanding forms.

My payout amount is less than expected

See the Why your payout may differ from your gross sales section above. If the discrepancy is unexplained after reviewing fees, refunds, and disputes, contact support with your payout ID and the specific transactions you believe are missing.

My payout failed

A failed payout is most commonly caused by incorrect bank account details. To resolve:

  1. Go to Sales > Payouts > See details

  2. Verify your bank account details are correct.

  3. Update if necessary — the payout will be retried on your next payout cycle.

Note: If your Teachable Payments account balance goes negative — due to refunds or disputes exceeding your available balance — new sales will automatically offset the negative balance first before any payouts are made.

My Stripe account is showing verification required

Stripe may request additional documentation at any time to comply with financial regulations. If your account is flagged for verification:

  1. Go to Sales > Payment Settings

  2. Follow the prompts listed there to submit the required documents.

  3. Payouts will resume once verification is complete.

CPG Payouts

For schools on a Custom Payment Gateway, payouts are processed and managed through your connected Stripe Standard account, not through Teachable. To view your balance, payout history, and schedule, log in directly to your Stripe dashboard.

FAQs

Is there a reserve held on my earnings?

No. Teachable Payments does not hold a reserve on your transactions. Your full earnings — minus fees, tax amounts, and partner earnings when applicable — are available for payout on your chosen schedule.

Can I have multiple bank accounts?

You can have one bank account connected per Teachable Payments account. To use a different bank account, update your details in the Payouts dashboard.

What currencies can I receive payouts in?

Payouts are made in the settlement currency of your Teachable Payments account, which is determined by your country. Teachable Payments supports settlement in local currencies across all 41 supported countries.

What happens to payouts if I switch gateways?

Sales made before you switch gateways will continue to pay out on your previous gateway's schedule. New sales after the switch will be processed through your new gateway immediately.

I'm a new creator — when will I receive my first payout?

For new Teachable Payments accounts, your initial payouts may take up to 4–6 weeks while Stripe completes its verification process. This is standard for all new Stripe Express accounts and is not specific to Teachable. After verification, all subsequent payouts follow your chosen schedule without delay.

Why do I need to submit tax forms to receive payouts?

US tax regulations require Teachable to collect tax forms (W-9 for US persons, W-8BEN for non-US persons) from creators earning above certain thresholds. Payouts are held if required forms are not on file. Submit your forms from Sales > Payment Settings > Tax.
