Price your products

Set up pricing plans and coupons for your courses, bundles, and coaching products.

This article covers a feature of Teachable Payments, our new payments experience powered by Stripe. Learn more.

Every paid product on Teachable needs at least one pricing plan before students can purchase it. You can create multiple pricing plans per product and add them to your sales page or share them directly.

This article covers creating and managing pricing plans, how currency works under Teachable Payments, fees for recurring plans, and how to create and manage coupons.

Pricing plan types

Teachable offers four pricing plan types:

Add a pricing plan

To add a pricing plan within your product:

  1. Go to the Pricing tab for your product.

  2. Click Add Pricing Plan.

  3. Choose a pricing type (Free, One-time purchase, Payment plan, Subscription)

  4. Fill in the required fields:

  • Price — the minimum price is $1 USD or the approximate equivalent in your settlement currency. Some currencies require prices to be rounded to the nearest ten (e.g. New Taiwan Dollar). You'll see an error message if your price needs adjusting.

  • Name — appears on the checkout page and, if you offer multiple plans, on the sales page.

  • Subtitle (optional) — a short phrase to highlight this pricing tier.

  • Detailed description (optional) — additional context shown below each plan on the sales page.

For subscriptions and payment plans, specify the billing frequency or number of payments. You can also optionally enable:

  • Free trial (subscriptions only)

  • Enrollment cap

  • Limited access duration

Currency and pricing

On Teachable Payments, prices are set in your school's settlement currency — the currency of your connected Teachable Payments account. You do not select a currency per pricing plan.

When students check out from a different country, Adaptive Pricing automatically converts and displays the price in their local currency. The exchange rate is applied by Stripe at the time of checkout, and currency conversion costs are passed to the buyer — not to you.

Note: Schools on a Custom Payment Gateway still select a currency per pricing plan, as CPG does not use Adaptive Pricing.

Subscription billing

Students are billed on a recurring schedule (weekly, biweekly, monthly, quarterly, semiannually, or annually) and maintain access as long as payments are successful.

  • The billing cycle starts on the exact timestamp of the student's enrollment date — including day-of-month variation for monthly plans

  • Students receive an invoice after each successful charge

  • Students can manage, upgrade, downgrade, or cancel their subscription through the Stripe Customer Portal

Failed subscription payments

If a recurring payment fails, Stripe's Smart Retry system attempts the charge up to 8 times over a two-week period at varying intervals. Email notifications are sent to the student at each failed attempt. If all retries fail, the student is automatically unenrolled and loses access to the product.

Note: Students will need to repurchase the product to regain access after unenrollment due to failed payments.

Free trials

You can offer students a free trial before their subscription begins. Enable this by toggling Includes a free trial when creating a subscription plan. Students receive full product access during the trial period and are charged at the end of it.

Payment plan billing

Payment plans charge students a fixed number of installments over a set period. Students receive full product access after their first payment.

  • Billing follows the same retry schedule as subscriptions

  • After all retries fail, the student is automatically unenrolled

  • Students receive an invoice after each successful installment

Manage pricing plans

Edit a plan

Go to the Pricing tab and make changes to the plan. You can edit:

  • Name, subtitle, and description

  • Enrollment cap and expiration settings (if enabled)

You cannot edit the price or plan type after creation. To change either, archive the existing plan and create a new one.

Set the displayed pricing on your sales pages

The top-listed pricing plan in the Pricing tab determines the price shown in your product catalog. Drag and drop plans to reorder them.

Archive or restore a plan

To archive: click the trash icon next to the plan. Active student enrollments are not affected, but all associated upsells are deactivated.

To restore: click Show archived pricing plans, then Restore Plan.

Get the checkout URL

Each pricing plan has its own unique checkout URL. To copy it:

  1. Go to the Pricing tab.

  2. Click Copy URL next to the plan.

Use these links to share specific plans directly with students, or to link to a specific pricing option from an external page.

Add pricing to your sales page

  1. Go to the Pages tab of your product.

  2. Click the Edit icon on your sales page.

  3. Click Add New Block and select Pricing block.

  4. Select which pricing plans to display.

Note: If no pricing plans are selected in the pricing block, the sales page will display "This course is closed for enrollment."

Coupons

Coupons let you offer discounted pricing on your products. They can be created for your entire school, for specific product types, or for specific products.

Note: Paid products cannot be sold for less than $1.00 USD. You can create 100% off coupons, but avoid discounts that lower the price to between $0.01 and $0.99.

Create a multiple-use coupon

Multiple-use coupons can be used by any student with the code, up to the usage limit you set. You can create them from Site > Coupons or from within a specific product.

  1. Go to Site > Coupons > School Coupons, or go to an Individual Product > Coupons

  2. Click Add New Coupon.

  3. Select Multiple Use.

  4. Choose the scope: All Products, Product Type, or a specific product.

  5. Fill in:

    • Discount type — percentage or fixed amount

    • Currency — if fixed amount is selected, the currency must be specified

    • Cadence — whether they should apply to all transactions or just the initial transaction

    • Coupon code — letters and numbers only

    • Internal name

    • Expiration date (optional)

    • Number available — up to 10,000 uses

  6. Click Save.

Note: Amount coupons will only be applied at checkout if the purchase is in the same currency as the discount. Please keep this in mind when using Adaptive Pricing to display dynamic currency at checkout.

Create single-use coupons

Single-use coupons are unique, randomly generated codes that can only be used once per code. They are downloaded as a CSV file.

  1. Go to Site > Coupons > School Coupons.

  2. Click Add New Coupon > Bulk Single Use.

  3. Choose the scope and fill in the required fields.

  4. Click Generate CSV to download your codes.

Note: Single-use coupons generated via the Bulk Coupon Generator do not appear in your school admin. Keep your downloaded CSV for future reference.

Manage coupons

View all active and archived coupons from Site > Coupons. You can also view product-specific coupons within the Coupons tab of an individual product.

To edit a coupon's expiration date, click the edit icon next to it. If a coupon code is already in use by another product, you'll see an error when attempting to create a new coupon with the same code.

Pricing & Coupons on CPG

On the Custom Payment Gateway, the same pricing plan availability and coupon functionality applies. However, on CPG, pricing plans require you to specify the currency.

FAQs

Can I offer different prices in different currencies?

On Teachable Payments, prices are set in your school's settlement currency. Adaptive Pricing automatically converts the price for students in other countries at checkout. You cannot set different prices per currency manually.

Can I change the price of an existing pricing plan?

No — prices cannot be edited after creation. Archive the existing pricing plan and create a new one with the updated price.

What happens to existing subscribers if I archive a pricing plan?

Active enrollments are not affected. Students already enrolled continue to have access and are billed on their existing schedule. Archiving only prevents new students from purchasing via that plan.

Can I offer a free trial on a payment plan?

Free trials are available on subscription plans only, not payment plans.

Do coupons apply to order bumps?

No — coupons apply to the main product only. If you want to offer a discount on an order bump, use the sales price field when creating the order bump.
