Upsell your products

How to add checkout upsells and in-lesson upsells to increase revenue per student.

This article covers a feature of Teachable Payments, our new payments experience powered by Stripe. Learn more.

On Teachable Payments, Teachable offers two types of upsells to help you promote additional products to your students:

Upsell type

Where it appears

Checkout upsell (formerly order bumps)

On the checkout page, before purchase is complete

In-lesson upsell

Embedded within a course lesson

Checkout upsells

A checkout upsell allows students to add an additional product to their purchase with a single click — directly on the checkout page, before completing payment. You can add up to 10 checkout upsells per product.

Note: Subscription upsells on one-time payment products are not supported. Free products do not support checkout upsells as they have no checkout page.

Add a checkout upsell

  1. Go to the Upsells tab of the product you want to add the upsell to.

  2. Click Create checkout upsell.

  3. Fill in the details:

    • Product — select the course, coaching product, digital download, or bundle to offer as the upsell

    • Pricing plan selections — select which pricing plan to display alongside the upsell, and which checkouts the upsell should apply to

    • Headline — the main text of the upsell offer

    • Description — a short description of what the student is getting

  4. Check Publish and click Save.

How it works for students

When a student reaches checkout for a product with a published upsell, the upsell offer appears. If they click to add it, it is added to their order summary and charged as part of the same transaction. This product will be reflected on the invoice received by the buyer, as separate line items.

Note: Coupons applied to the main product do not apply to checkout upsells. Students already enrolled in the upsell product will not see the offer at checkout.

In-lesson upsells

An in-lesson upsell embeds a product offer directly within a course lesson. When a student clicks the call-to-action, they're taken to the checkout page for that product.

Add an in-lesson upsell

  1. Go to the course curriculum and open the lesson you want to add the upsell to.

  2. In the lesson editor, under Marketing Tools, click the Upsell block.

  3. Select the product type and specific product from the dropdown menus.

  4. Choose the Pricing Plan to offer.

  5. Customize the headline and description in the Block Details section.

  6. Click Save Upsell.

Note: If a pricing plan doesn't appear in the dropdown, the product may not have a paid pricing plan set up yet. Go to the product's Pricing tab to create one first.
