Learn how to add your organization's tax ID during checkout, what to expect, and what to do if something goes wrong.
Overview
If you're buying a product on Teachable on behalf of an organization, you may see an option to add a tax ID during checkout. This helps Teachable calculate tax correctly for eligible purchases and include your tax details on your receipt when applicable.
Important: A tax ID does not remove tax in every country or for every purchase. Whether tax is charged depends on your billing country, local tax rules, and whether your tax ID is valid for that transaction.
When should you use this field?
Use the tax ID field if you are purchasing on behalf of an organization that has a valid tax ID for your country or region. This includes businesses, universities, nonprofits, and government entities.
Common examples include a VAT ID, GST/HST number, RFC, UBN, or other tax registration number, depending on where you are located.
Note: If you are making a personal purchase, you can leave this field blank.
How to add a tax ID during checkout
Go to the product checkout page.
Enter your billing details first.
Look for the Add a business tax ID option.
Enter your organization name if prompted.
Enter your tax ID exactly as it is registered.
Complete your purchase.
Note: If you do not see the tax ID field right away, finish entering your billing address first. The field only appears after your address is complete.
What happens after you enter a tax ID
After you enter your tax ID, Teachable validates it in real time against government records to determine whether it can be applied to that purchase.
If accepted: Your checkout may update to reflect the correct tax treatment. Your receipt may also include the tax ID you entered, if your country allows it.
If not accepted: You may still be able to complete your purchase with tax applied.
Important: Entering a tax ID does not guarantee that tax will be removed. Some countries still require tax to be charged even when a buyer provides an organization tax ID.
Why tax may still be charged
Unverified registration: Your tax ID could not be confirmed as active and registered. Teachable is required to charge tax if your registration cannot be verified.
Country mismatch: Your billing country does not match the country where the tax ID is registered.
Local tax rules: Your country requires tax to be charged for that type of purchase.
Invalid ID: Your tax ID is not valid for VAT or tax exemption purposes.
Purchase type: The purchase does not qualify for reverse charge or tax-exempt treatment.
Note: For U.S. purchases, an EIN or other tax number does not automatically apply tax exemption. If your organization is tax-exempt and tax was charged, see the contact section below.
Troubleshooting
Tax ID was rejected
Try the following in order:
Confirm your billing country matches your tax registration country.
Confirm you are using your organization's tax ID, not a personal tax number.
Enter the number manually instead of pasting it.
Remove extra spaces, punctuation, or country prefixes unless they are part of the official format.
Refresh the page and try again.
Try a different browser or device.
Tip: If you are unsure which number to use, check with your tax advisor or local tax authority before retrying. Common mix-up: entering a personal identification number or a local tax reference that is not accepted for checkout validation.
Tax ID is missing from your receipt
If your tax ID was accepted, it may appear on your receipt when applicable. The format varies by purchase and location. If it does not appear, that does not always mean your purchase was processed incorrectly.
You forgot to add your tax ID
If you completed checkout without a tax ID, it cannot be added after the fact. You have two options depending on what you need.
If you need your tax ID on your receipt — self-service, no support needed:
Go to Edit Profile and add your tax ID to the name field.
Go to Purchase History and click View Receipt.
Take a screenshot for your records.
If you believe you are owed a tax refund:
Email [email protected] and include:
A copy of your purchase receipt
The date of purchase
The amount of tax charged
A copy of your tax exemption certificate or tax ID registration
Tax-exempt organizations
If you purchased on behalf of a tax-exempt organization and tax was charged, contact Teachable with a copy of your receipt and your exemption documentation.
What appears on your receipt
Depending on the transaction, your receipt may include:
Billing name and address
Organization name, if entered
Tax ID, if accepted and applicable
Tax amount charged
Supplier details required for the transaction
Note: For purchases where Teachable handles tax collection, Teachable's tax details may appear in the supplier section.
