Login Changes: Switching to Passwordless Login with OTP

This article reviews the new login process for your Teachable account, transitioning to a passwordless system. Starting in September 2024, Teachable will implement a more secure and convenient login method using One-Time Passcodes (OTP). This guide explains how to log in using OTP and provides basic troubleshooting steps for common login issues.

Overview

Starting in September 2024, Teachable is going passwordless! Instead of remembering a password, you will now have the option to receive a One-Time Passcode (OTP) sent directly to your email address. This change enhances security and simplifies the login process, ensuring you no longer need to manage or remember a password. The OTP will be valid for 10 minutes, providing ample time to access your account securely.

How to log In

To log in to your school using the new OTP method:

  1. Navigate to your school’s unique login page.
You can access the login page by utilizing the same login url you have been using:
    • For Admins reference our detailed guide here.
    • For Students reference this detailed guide here.
  2. Enter your email address.
Input the email address associated with your Teachable account.
  3. Receive your One-Time Passcode (OTP).
A passcode will be sent to your email address. This code is valid for 10 minutes.
  4. Enter the OTP on the login screen.
After receiving the passcode, enter it in the designated field on the login screen and click Login.
  5. Congratulations you have successfully logged in!

Troubleshooting login issues

If you encounter any issues with the new OTP login process, follow these troubleshooting steps:

  • I’m not receiving the OTP email:
    • Confirm that the email is spelled correctly.
    • Check secondary folders in your email (e.g., spam/junk, promotions, updates).
    • Safelist Teachable’s email domains.
    • Resend the OTP by clicking the “Resend code” link on the login page.
  • The OTP is not working:
    • Ensure you are using the most recent code sent to your email.
    • Remember, the OTP is valid for 10 minutes. If it expires, request a new one.
    • You can still use your password by selecting “Having trouble? Login with password instead” after populating your email address.
  • I’m experiencing other login issues:

Student experience

Below is a video walkthrough of the login experience:

  1. Once your student clicks “Login” when visiting your school [schoolname].teachable.com, they will see a log in portal to input their email address.

  2. After they click Log In, an email with the verification code is sent to their address.
  3. Once received, you students will apply the verification code to the verification code portal. Once logged in, they will have immediate access to their available products.

If they are unable to access their email, they can click on the "Login with password instead" option at the bottom of the verification code portal where they will be redirected back to the email and password login portal. They can also use their Google account if connected.

Frequently asked questions

When will one time password (OTP) be available to all schools?

Starting September 30th, 2024, one time passwordless login and sign up will be available across all schools.

I am on teachable.com, but I see password login, not one time passwordless login, how can I access OTP?

You can access OTP by navigating to your school’s homepage, sales page, or course page. The navigation at the top has a “Login” link for you and any members of your school (students, affiliates, authors) to log in using just their email.

My student(s) created an account through Google, will they still be able to get a code?

Yes, we will send the verification code to the email they registered with Teachable when they purchased the course.

I enrolled a student manually in the Users > Add Student option with a password, will that still work?

Yes, the student can simply enter their email and get the one time code in their inbox to login or, if they have issues, they’ll still be able to access the ability to log in via a password by clicking “Having Trouble? Log in with Password instead” link on the verification code page.

My student / affiliate / author is having issues with one time passwordless login, how can I help them?

  • Please ask them to confirm the spelling of their emails. The system may appear to be sending a verification code, however, if the incorrect email is entered, they will not receive the code.
  • If this still isn’t working, you can check to ensure they are enrolled in your product by navigating to Users > Students in your admin dashboard for your school.
  • From there you can check to ensure they have the same email as the one they are trying to login with.
  • You can also set a password (or change their password) on their account and share that with them.
  • Then, when they enter an email they can select “Having Trouble? Login with password instead” and they can enter the new temporary password you’ve shared with them.

When I go to manually enroll students, I no longer see a “password” field. How can I add a password for my student to login?

With one time passcode login, you no longer need to set a password for them. Now you can simply add them to the system.

Once they click “Login” on your school’s homepage, sales, or course page, they can simply enter the email you enrolled them with and the system will send them a one time code. They will then be asked to set their own password.

Does this change anything in the app experience / dashboard for students, affiliates, authors, or myself (a creator)?

No, the one time passwordless experience only applies to the login flow. There are no one time passwordless checks within the app experience once they’ve logged in.

My student entered the wrong email, what can I do to resolve this?

If your student entered the incorrect email that does not match what they are registered / enrolled with at course sign up, then they will not receive the code. Please ask them to check their spelling and try again.

If I or my student have both a user account and a Teachable account, but with different email addresses, which email address should they use to receive a One-Time Password?

If you have a Teachable and school login with 2 different emails, the next time you try to login with one of the emails, we will send an OTP code to the email you send. Once you verify the code, then we will connect your pre-existing secondary email to the email you entered.

If you or your students have any issues with login and have 2 accounts, you can reach out to Support via this form and share the two emails and which email you would like to be the primary email login. From there the Support team will make this your primary Teachable account in order to log in with one time passwordless login.

How can I continue to use passwords for my students?

If for some reason you want to push your users to the existing password entry flow by default you'll need to change the login URL in your navigation. From the default button to a new custom URL following this format:

https://sso.teachable.com/secure/YOUR-SCHOOL-ID/identity/login/password?force=true

You just need to replace YOUR-SCHOOL-ID with your actual school ID.
