Navigate and View Course Content

This article goes over how to view, navigate, and interact with course content as a student who has enrolled in a course hosted by Teachable.

Understanding the course curriculum view

Once you’ve logged in to a school, click My Courses and then click a course to be taken to its course curriculum:

In the course sidebar, you can view the following information:

  • Course Progress - This progress bar displays the percentage of the course that you have completed.
    course_progress.png
  • Class Curriculum - This displays all of the sections and lessons in the course.
    course_curriculum.png
  • Your Instructor - This provides descriptions/bios of the individual(s) teaching the course.

Navigating through lessons

There are several ways you can navigate through a course. One way to start viewing a lesson is to click on the Start next lesson button at the top of the course curriculum. This will take you to the next uncompleted lesson in the course.

Alternatively, you can click the Start button next to each individual lesson to view them.

If a section of your course is marked with a clock icon, then the section has not been released yet. You’ll need to wait until the section is released by the school owner before you’ll be able to view it. Once this time has elapsed, you’ll be able to access the lessons in the section.

If a section of your course is marked with a lock icon, then you must complete all lesson content (e.g. a video or quiz) in sequential order, before progressing to these lessons.student-lecture-locked-course-compliance.png

If you do not complete a lesson video, then you’ll be unable to progress to the next lesson until you watch the entirety of the video:course-compliance-student-video-completion.png

If you do not achieve a passing grade on a quiz within a set number of retakes, then you will not be able to progress to the next lesson. Your school owner will receive an email notification indicating that you are not able to progress through the course and will have the option to reset your quiz score. If the school owner resets your quiz score, then you will receive an email notification indicating that you can retake the quiz.

Marking your course progress

As you progress through lessons, click on the Complete and Continue button to mark the lesson as complete and move on to the next lesson in the course:

complete_and_continue.gif

Afterwards, you’ll see a checkmark next to the completed lesson and your course progress percentage will increase. Incomplete lessons are denoted with an empty or a partially filled-in circle. Completed lessons are denoted with a checkmark. You can view individual lesson progress and course progress in the course sidebar here:

It’s important to note a few things as you mark your progress through a course:

  • Lessons will only be marked as complete if the Complete and continue button is clicked. If you navigate through the course by selecting individual lessons in the course sidebar, then the lessons will not be marked as complete.
  • You can still access lessons even if they are marked as complete. To do, click on the individual lesson in the course sidebar.
  • If you want to reset your course progress, you can contact your school owner and request that they reset your course or lesson progress. If the school does not have access to this feature, they can delete your existing account and then manually add/enroll you back in the course. This effectively “resets” your course progress.

Adjusting lesson video settings

You can adjust the settings for lesson videos in your course by clicking on the gear icon at the top of the lesson list:

  • Autoplay - At this time, this function is managed in the video player settings described below.
  • Autocomplete - When toggled, lessons are automatically marked as complete when you finish the last video in the lesson.

Additionally, within the video player, you can manage the following settings:

  • Play or pause - Stop or continue the video at any time by clicking on the play icon or by using the (k) shortcut on your keyboard.
  • Forward or rewind - Skip ahead or jump back 10 seconds at a time with the forward/rewind icons or the arrow shortcuts on your keyboard.
  • Volume - Turn the volume of the video player up or down using the volume slide.
  • Autoplay - When toggled on, the first video within a lesson automatically plays when you enter the lesson.
  • Subtitles on or off - If enabled by the school owner, turn on or off available subtitles by clicking on the subtitle icon or by the (c) shortcut on your keyboard.
  • Miniplayer - Switch to the picture-in-picture view to navigate to other tabs while still watching the video in progress.
  • Full screen - Switch to view the video across your entire screen by clicking the full screen icon or using the (f) shortcut on your keyboard. To exit fullscreen, click the exit full screen icon or use the (f) shortcut again.

  • Settings - Click the gear icon to adjust the following settings within your player:

Note-taking within the video player

For video files, both creators and students can take private notes directly in the video player. These notes are only visible to the person who wrote them and are not shareable or downloadable at this time.

To turn on notes and see them directly in the video player:

  1. Click the Personal Notes icon and toggle On.
  2. Type your note under Personal Notes and click the Send button.
  3. The note will appear as an annotation within the video’s timeline.

Video picture-in-picture

Videos uploaded to Teachable have a picture-in-picture feature that allows students to minimize the course video to the corner of their screen.

When the video is minimized, students can navigate to other browser tabs or windows—allowing them to view the video in the corner of the screen while partaking in other browsing behaviors (such as taking notes, looking at other relevant course materials, etc.).

NOTE: If you are using the picture-in-picture feature, you must keep the lesson/page that contains the video open in one of your browser tabs. If you exit out of the page with the video (which can happen if you click into another lesson in the course), the picture-in-picture video will close.

To use picture-in-picture viewing:

  1. While a course video is playing, click the picture-in-picture icon in the bottom right corner of the video player.
  2. Navigate to other browser tabs or windows, keeping the minimized video playing on screen. As needed, you can drag and drop the minimized video across your screen. You can also press the pause button to pause the video.

When using picture-in-picture, click the Back to tab button on the minimized video to return to the page that contains the video:

NOTE: Picture-in-picture videos work on both mobile and desktop browsers for Chrome, Edge, and Safari.

Downloading lesson content

In some cases, you may have the option to download content directly from Teachable, depending on how the school owner has set up their course. If content is downloadable, it will be denoted with a paper clip symbol. Click on the download link to download the content:

Depending on your browser settings, the file will either download directly to your computer, or a new browser tab will open, where you can download the file to your computer.

Course files cannot be printed directly within Teachable. If you would like to print any course files, you will first need to download the file on your computer. Then, you can open the file directly on your computer using a third-party application (such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Google Drive, or other word processing apps) and print the file from there.

Commenting on a lesson

If a school owner has set up comments, then you’ll be able to comment on individual lessons.

To add a comment, scroll down to the bottom of the lesson to the Post a Comments section and click on the arrow icon to reply.

Add text into the Leave a Comment field and/or upload an image using the image uploader here:

comment_image.png

An image uploader will appear, where you can select a file to upload to your comment.

Troubleshooting

The course videos are not loading.

Some courses include videos within lessons. If a video in a lesson is not loading or playing correctly, it could indicate issues with your browser, device, or connection.

If the video was directly uploaded to the lesson, you can lower the playback quality to improve loading speed by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of the video player.video_player_gear_icon.jpg

If video playback issues continue, we recommend trying to update your browser or view the videos in a different browser. Additionally, you can contact the school owner to see if there are any issues with the video upload itself.

I did not receive my course certificate.

Some courses include a course certificate that is issued once you complete the course.

If you did not receive a course certificate, confirm with the school owner if the course is intended to include a certificate or not. You can contact the school owner via the school contact form.

If the course is intended to include a certificate, make sure you have marked all lessons as complete.

Once all lessons have been marked as complete, you will receive an email notification with a link to view your certificate.

If you do not receive the email notification, you can still download your certificate at any time by clicking the Certificate tab from your course view. The Download button is underneath the certificate image.

My issue is not listed.

If your issue is not listed above, please contact your school owner directly.
