This article explains what an upsell is, and how to add an upsell offer in a course lesson or a product thank you page.

Overview

An upsell is an opportunity to entice a customer to make another, usually related, purchase after they complete a purchase of one of your products. This can include driving sales toward a higher level of an ongoing product series, or offering exclusive add-ons.

For schools on the Basic plan or up, you can offer these additional upsells directly within a course's curriculum via a lesson block, or as a one-click option on the thank you page after checkout.

Managing All Upsells in One Place

School owners on Teachable can now conveniently manage all their upsells in a single location. Within the Upsell Funnels tab of their course, various upsell types can be organized and monitored. These include:

  1. Thank You Page Upsell: Offering products immediately after a course purchase.
  2. Course Lesson Upsell: Integrating upsell offers within course lessons.
  3. Post-Purchase Upsell: New feature allowing upsells right after checkout but before the thank you page, enabling a one-click buying experience.

This centralized management streamlines the upselling process, making it more efficient and user-friendly.

Upsell in a lesson

To add an upsell into one of your lessons:

  1. Navigate to the course curriculum and either create a new lesson or edit an existing lesson.
  2. In the lesson editor, under Marketing Tools, click the Upsell block. A popup will appear.
  3. Use the tabs to choose a product type (courses, coaching, digital downloads, or bundles). Use the drop down menu to choose the specific product.
  4. Once you have selected the product, choose the Pricing Plan from the dropdown menu.
  5. In the Block Details section, use the text fields to customize the details of your upsell.
  6. Click Save Upsell when finished.

When a student clicks on the call to action button on the upsell block, they will immediately be redirected to the checkout page to complete their transaction. 

Upsell in a thank you page

NOTE: These options are currently only available in Page Editor 2.0. If you are using Page Editor 1.0 and want to offer an upsell on the thank you page, please refer to our Knowledge Base here.

You can also offer a one-click upsell option directly on your product's Thank You page after a student has purchased a course, coaching, or bundle product. 

To add an upsell in a thank you page:

  1. Navigate to the thank you page editor from the product Sales Pages menu.
  2. Click the Add Upsell block.
  3. Select a product to upsell. Once you select the product type, you can choose the specific product and which pricing plan you want to offer using the drop down menus.
  4. You can customize what your upsell block says with the Heading Text and Description Text fields.
    NOTE: The Call To Action (CTA) button is not editable as it automatically displays the student's previous payment method to create a quick, one-click checkout experience.
  5. Be sure to click Update in the top right corner to save your changes.

When a student clicks on the call to action button on the upsell block, their transaction will immediately be complete, without having to go back through checkout.

There are some cases where a student will need to return back to checkout to complete their transaction, including:

  • If they used BNPL on the original product
  • If the upsell is not set as a one-time payment pricing plan
  • If they used PayPal in non-USD

Post-Purchase Upsells

To create a post-purchase upsell:

  1. Press create post-purchase upsell
  2. Use the Product Details section to choose a product type (courses, coaching, digital downloads, or bundles). Use the drop down menu to choose the specific product.
  3. Once you have selected the product, choose the Pricing Plan from the dropdown menu.
  4. In the Offer Headline section, add a headline and subheading to your upsell.
  5. In the Additional Content sections, use the rich text block to customize the details and add images to your upsell.
  6. Once you are done filling out the details, click Save.

When a student purchases your course, they will be directed to the a page where they will be able to purchase the upsell with one-click.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add an upsell to a digital download product?

At this time, upsells on a thank you page is not available for Digital Downloads.

Why don't I have a pricing option for upselling my product?

If you do not see an option for a pricing plan in the drop down menu, it may be because you have not yet setup a pricing option for that specific product you want to upsell. Go to the product's pricing area and create a new pricing plan

Why did my existing upsell stop working?

If you delete the pricing plan for the product you are upselling, the button link in your upsell will no longer work. You can select a new pricing option by editing the upsell block.
